2006 Youth Hall of Fame

The signature annual event of the Countywide Youth Commission (CYC)  is the Youth Hall of Fame Awards.  This is a series of awards given every year to 5 deserving youth (between 12 & 18 years of age) and 1 adult from Contra Costa County whose achievements would otherwise go unnoticed.  The CYC believes that there are many people who make valuable contributions to our communities and are rarely recognized for these good deeds.  Help us to honor these people by submitting a nomination.

Here are the categories....

Good Samaritan: someone who goes out of his or her way to do something good without getting recognition.
School Leadership: someone who exhibits outstanding school pride and who lends a helping hand for the good of the school.
Valiant Volunteer: someone who gives his or her time and energy to a worthy cause or organization.
Sports Leadership: someone who works unselfishly for the good of the team.
Artiste: someone who uses his or her musical, literary, or artistic talent to benefit the school or community.
Adult Advocate: someone (an adult) who works diligently to support our youth

We invite you to submit a nomination of these categories by completing the attached form.  Please , no nominations of immediate relatives.

Police Survey Report

In spring 2005 the Commission conducted a countywide survey to gauge youth opinions about law enforcement. The survey came in response to concerns expressed by youth in a series of countywide forums conducted in 2003. The survey results revealed that many young people are wary of law enforcement and have a negative view of law enforcement personnel. The Commission found these results concerning and believes that the tension in youth-law enforcement may impede the ability of law enforcement to operate effectively and also puts young people at risk.

Thus, the Commission created a  report which details the survey results and offers a series of recommendations for improving youth-law enforcement relations. These recommendations are focused mainly on building trust and creating positive interactions between young people and law enforcement, rather than on changing long standing law enforcement practices. The Commission believes that the implementation of these recommendations will help to reduce tension between the two groups and allow for a more positive relationship between the two. We are eager to work with government agencies, community programs, and others to respond to the sruvey results and work to improve youth-law enforcement realtions. Calling All Students in Contra Costa County

The CYC is still looking for dedicated middle and high school students from around the county to join the commission.  The commission serves as a liaison to the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County and provides recommendations to them regarding youth-relevant issues.  If you are interested, please fill out the application on the post below and send it in.  Thanks for your interest and good luck!

APPLICATIONS FOR 2005/2006

The CYC is now accepting applications for the 2005/2006 School Year.  Please fill out the application and return it as soon as possible.  The application must be postmarked by May 27, 2005.  Interviews will be held from between the weeks of July 6, 2005 and July 22, 2005.  Thanks for your interest.

Joint Youth Councils Meeting

The CYC will be holding a Joint Youth Councils Meeting with Youth Councils from all over Contra Costa County on Saturday, April 23, 2005 from 1 PM to 4PM at the UCCE (75 Santa Barbara Road, Pleasant Hill).  Invitations have been sent.  Please RSVP as soon as possible.
